overdue updates

July 15, 2010

At the beginning of April I wrote a race report on the Birch Bay 15K – the one where I lost my underwear!  I promised to tell you the entire story, however returned home to our hometown enduring the loss of a child and my family suffering my stepfather’s accident

It may be 3 months later, but I haven’t forgotten – actually, I have been reminded (thanks J & J) that it’s important to tell readers how panties can end up on the ground otherwise said readers may actually believe I’m that fast! 😉

Panties:  Sometimes when I’m in someone else’s home, uncertain of locking doors, I will take off my clothes in one quick movement and proceed to either get dressed or jump in the shower – depending on my goal for the day (stink vs. stench).  On the day prior to BB15K, I practiced this move in my cousin-in-law’s home prior to jumping into the shower.  I tend to get more nervous when I’m concerned other’s will see me therefore I shove all clothes into a pile and scoop them all up at once when I leave the room.  The next day the air was a bit brisk when FR and I headed out the door.  I ran back into the house and slipped on the sweats I had been wearing the night before.  We drove to the starting line and sat in the car for a few minutes.  Finally, we decided to get our bibs (race numbers), and swag (freebies).  I started walking ahead of FR because I was so cold.  As I walked I felt something underfoot.  Questioningly I looked down to see something white but kept walking.  FR was quickly beside me and then I realized, “THOSE WERE MY UNDERWEAR!”  I whispered it to him and he looked back in disbelief.   After we grabbed our goodies (bibs & swag) we headed back to the car to leave our sweats, coats, swag, and dignity.  We slowly approached the underwear in the parking lot and gave them a good look – Yep. They were mine.   And they were day-old.  Apparently when I quickly disrobed the day before & piled everything, they landed in the leg waiting to be shook loose in the parking lot of an abandoned water park in Birch Bay, WA.   Of course we laughed til we cried and we took pictures.  FR tried to convince me to grab them yet again, “I will not be ‘that’ girl!”   Lesson Learned.

Step-Dad: First.  Thank you all who have prayed, who have asked, and who have shared your own stories.  I’m happy to say he is recovering.  Though he is not 100% he did say his first word last weekend “$HIT!”  Which our entire family agrees is a perfect response to how he must be feeling.   He spent the first 3 weeks in the hospital in a coma – we all waited to see if he would survive.  He spent the next 5 weeks in Atlanta, GA at Shepherd Center being forced to wake-up and starting therapy to keep his muscles and mind from atrophy.  He’s now ‘home’ (read: skilled nursing facility 10 miles from their farm) and getting pestered daily by Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, my mom, his daughters, his parents, and his grandchildren.   Seeing him again was amazing!  He is awake and he is making eye contact.  You can tell the wheels are turning, but the response has not caught up.  Please keep praying if you feel moved.  It’s been a remarkable journey.

Baby Vincent: Justice will prevail.  His mom and her boyfriend are beginning the court process.   Vincent is – Pain free.  Safe.  In the arms of Jesus.

Run on Friends!

Today’s funny:  Cousin Runner text: “3:20 to BQ” (Boston Qualifying time for a man of his ‘maturity’me: “Did you see mine? I might be able to pull it off.”  CR: “Yeah. 3:50 all I have to say is ‘bitch!’ ;-)” me: “I know! The one time I’m happy I have ovaries!”

That’s funny that you shared about your step-dad’s first word because your daughter shared it today at clay class too. She said it was a bad word, not REAL bad. Other sharing included someone who held their breath underwater for eight minutes and someone whose eyes are red when she’s in the dark. Amazing stuff. At least I was pretty sure what your daughter shared was TRUE!!!! Thanks for confirming it 🙂

    And the panty story, priceless.

So glad that everything is turning out well for you. What an emotional roller coaster you’ve been on!

Love the panty story. I would have run the entire race wondering if they really were mine and how I could have left them behind. What a distraction that would have been. Funny!
